Gold Coast Boat Hull Extensions
Gold Coast Boat Hull Extensions are a highly complex job, with several different stages involved – And something you should leave to the Gold Coast Boat Repairs Experts (Us!)
The first step is to make a Jig Box, with the waterline clearly marked. The boat (obviously!) has to come out of the water and we can then commence preparing the surface for glassing. The bottom base will be of plywood, 3/8″ or better, while you can use lauan for the transom if you prefer.
The curve on the chines is created from wooden strips and Mica board used to cover the areas we will glass. We then need to recess the tabs for the trim tab cylinders. The next, critical, step is working on the return for bolting the boat hull extension to the existing vessel (it’s not a bad idea to tape all of the seams to prevent the edges of the wood sticking to the mould. Once the mould is finished, we need to wax the entire surface.
The mould needs to have several layers of glass laid into it – we recommend 4 layers below the waterline and either 3 or 4 layers above the waterline. Additional layers should be applied to stress areas such as the trim tab inserts and chines.
Start laying in the core while the glass is still wet. Then lay a plastic sheet over the whole mould and vacuum it out to ensure proper bonding; leave to cure overnight. Extra glass will be attached once the Boat Hull Extension is attached to the boat.
Now the boat hull extension and the boat need to be united and we pray for a perfect fit. You will almost certainly need machinery to move the boat hull extension into position, as the mould will need to be laid on its side to get the boat hull extension out. 
Before uniting the boat hull extension and the boat, you need to prepare the surfaces. Grind the existing hull to take off the gelcoat and get back to bare glass.
Depending on the size of the vessel, a crane will probably be required to line up the boat hull extension and the boat; if it is a small pleasure craft, you might get away with a bobcat or low loader. You cannot do this manually as the the two parts need to line up perfectly and stay there for hours as we finish off the boat hull extension
Once everything has been glassed and bolted together, we need to remove the old transom. Finally, a good waxing and we are done.
